Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
Churchill is where the polar bears tend to gather first at the begining of winter in the Hudson Bay area. The Churchill River flows into the bay lowering the salinity, allowing the ice to form sooner. The bears need to be able to walk out on the ice to hunt seals which they cannot access from shore. They have been mostly fasting since the last winter ended so this is an important step to start feeding again on their main food source. This is also why they do not hibernate. Climate change is delaying the ice formation every year, making the bears wait longer and longer between meals. It was great to see people and vehicles (with live web cameras) from Polar Bears International giving presentations and monitoring the area.
